In a lot of ways, we have become so caught up in the trappings and motions of modern church and church buildings that we forget about the original church - the wilderness. We were created in the Garden. Moses received the Torah on a mountaintop. Jesus was baptized in a river and preached along lakeshores. The Abrahamic traditions (Islam, Judaism, and Christianity) are based largely on authentic experiences of God in the wilderness, in the midst of Creation.Â

Worship in the Wild is about a yearning to reconnect with the Earth through the lens of faith. What does it mean to have a green spirituality? What is our responsibility, as people of faith, to protect Creation? How does that, in turn, help us live out our mission to love and serve others?

Being the Church is about being God's hands and feet in the world. It is about looking outward and not just inward. To do that, sometimes we have to take down walls. These might be the physical walls of our constructed churches that put God in a man-made box, when God is really present everywhere. Or, these might be the metaphorical walls that divide us from "the other" when we do not understand the justice issues that are tied to the environment.

Worship in the Wild is a ministry in partnership with the Somesville Union Meeting House and the Sunrise Association of the Maine Conference United Church of Christ.
